Sheep Galore!

19th September 2019

As sponsors of 8 rare breed German Schafpate Sheep (translation: Sheep Godfather), we recently received some stunning photographs from our friends in Germany.

Here these photos are of some 1000 sheep that around 70 sponsors visited- walking through the beautiful landscape of “Steinhemer Heide” in Steinhem, Germany.

For those of you who don’t know, the Opal Schafpate and Viridian Schafpate Sock Yarn Ranges are products of these rare sheep. The wool is supplied from about 30,000 sheep from the nature reserve “BiosphareAlbi” where traditional practices are used.

The ranges are a part of the Schafpate-Project which started in 2008 and consists of two main elements.

The first is the sheep sponsorship which supports farming, preservation and the upkeep of the extraordinary landscapes. As well as this, the sponsor gets to name their sheep, just as we have done with our Viridian Schafpate range.

The second is the wool project which enables more jobs through higher quality wool and helps ensure that environmental and nature conservation preservation is continued.

This event happens annually as a meeting for sponsors and is held by the Smietana family. Here is Charly showing off his shearing skills!

As many of you know, we have collaborated to make our Viridian Schafpate range of 4 Ply Sock Yarn which can be accessed here

As well as this, Opal Schafpate have released a new range

We are proud to be supporting an environmental and animal friendly way of life and enjoy receiving such amazing photos of these beautiful creatures!
